The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (commercially and institutionally recognized as DOST-PNRI) is a specialized government research agency under the Department of Science and Technology in the Philippines. Originally created in 1958 as the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), the institute is mandated to undertake research and development activities in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy, technology, and radiation. PNRI acts as the country’s primary regulatory body over radioactive and nuclear materials, ensuring public safety and enforcing compliance guidelines across medical, industrial, and agricultural sectors. Based on a secure campus near the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City, the institute operates critical infrastructure—including the Philippine Research Reactor-1 (PRR-1 SATER facility), a Cobalt-60 Multipurpose Irradiation facility, and an Electron Beam facility—supporting scientific advancements in food irradiation, cancer therapy dosimetry, and isotopic environmental mapping.
